[WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!]

Kanda, as his is now, is currently living his second life. Being a Second Exorcist, his brain was transferred to a new (younger) body in order to pass on his innocence-using ability to the new and improved body. Because of this mission to reconnect to the innocence, these young children were forced to go through synchronization exercises where they tried to sync once again with their Innocence. These always ended in several deaths, the innocence ripping the young children apart with the sync failed. However, since they were 'Seconds' and weren't exactly human and were able to regenerate at alarming rates; even coming back from the dead. Kanda has had visions of the very end of his former life, where he is crushed by a level 2 Akuma. All he remembers from his former life is that vision, and a woman who's face he can't clearly make out. During the transfer process, it is revealed that the scientists of the 6th Research facility of the Asian branch repressed the 2nd exorcists' former-life memories. It is also easy to guess that this is what made both Kanda and eventually Alma Karma unstable.

On Yu's 8th (or 9th) birthday he woke up in a small pool of water in a large room full of other such pools with sleeping 2nds in them. From what we know, it is probable that this is the first time he ever woke up in his younger body. The first person he met was his fellow 2nd Exorcist, Alma Karma. Even as a young child, Kanda's always-angry attitude was fully developed, causing him to be a rather nasty little kid and to fight often with the overly-positive Alma. A little more than a year later, Kanda began having more and more visions (of his former life), causing his health to drop and the doctors to become concerned, it was the first sign before a second would become unstable after all.

Alma attempted to save him by sneaking him out of the lab and kicking him into the sewer, but this only resulted in Kanda drowning and being picked up and saved by the newly blinded Noise Marie and a young Bak Chang. Kanda was then retrieved by the Crow and brought back to division 6. After Kanda's condition worsened the staff deemed him unsalvageable and decided to put him down.

While they were performing the ritual to seal Kanda, Alma was evading the scientists to get to the Innocence shrine, wanting to use it to free Kanda once and for all. In doing this, he unfortunately found out exactly what dirty little secrets the Order was hiding. The Innocence he had gone through countless syncro tests to connect to was attached to a dead exorcist, the original Alma Karma. The sudden rush of information, memories, and the sheer desperation of his wanting to save his beloved Yu caused him to snap, killing everyone in his path which just so happened to be all of the scientists and personnel of the 6th Science division.

For some unknown reason, Kanda's original body and the innocence resounded with his new younger body while he was in a deep sleep after being sealed by Director Chang (Bak's mother). He awoke, his emotions causing his innocence to synchronize with him, a winged-sword appearing out of nowhere in his hand. He immediately set out to find Alma so that they could escape the Order together. In his search he came across a dying Noise Marie and saved him by accidentally dripping some of his own blood into the wound on the older man's head. It instantly stabilized him, and recognizing Kanda by the sound of his voice, Agreed to go with Kanda even if the small boy had to drag him along. They eventually found Alma, who had massacred the entire 6th division science team with his newly awakened innocence. Kanda barely recognized the other boy, who then proceeded to try and kill both him and Marie, saying that they could die together. But, remembering some of his past memories, Kanda decided he didn't want to die and that he would live to find that woman in his dreams. When reasoning with Alma didn't work, Kanda had to kill him in order to stay alive even if it hurt him so much to do so. But, did he really kill the boy?

It's not said how General Tiedoll found him, but Kanda traveled with him, becoming his pupil and followed him to the Black Order in England. There he met Lenalee Lee, reunited with Noise Marie and became a proper (2nd) exorcist. When he was twelve, Jerry became the head cook at the Black Order. This was the first time Kanda ever had soba, and he liked it so much he has it for each of his three daily meals. At sixteen, Kanda met Lavi and nearly decapitated him after the redhead called him ‘Yu-kun.’ Finally, at age eighteen Kanda met Allen and tried to kill him after the gatekeeper mistook Allen for an Akuma. On both occasions Lenalee stopped him, which is much the reason why Lavi and Allen are alive today.

Most recently, the headquarters was attacked and the Black Order had to move to a new location. Cross, Allen's master, was killed and Allen was revealed to be the 14th’s avatar. Kanda acted colder than usual to Allen after the announcement, but has started to lighten up. Like many of his other times of moodiness, it wasn't because of the actual news, but because it reminded Kanda of his first friend and the tragedy that took place. Soon after the announcement, Allen, Kanda, and Marie were sent on a mission to Paris to investigate a little boy (Timothy) who was believed to have innocence. After a large battle with a team of 2nd and 3rd level Akumas, and one 4th, they retrieved the boy and brought him back to the Order along with one of his teachers, Emilia Galmar.

Kanda then traveled back to the Asian branch to visit with his old friend Master Zhu, who had forged his sword Mugen. There he met Bak, who tried to apologize for what had happened so many years back in the 6th Science division and for the revelation of the 3rd exorcist project (that he himself was not a part of). Kanda ended up punching him, and leaving once Allen and Lenalee arrived at the Asian branch where they left for their current mission, exterminating Akuma in varied places around the world with the 3rd exorcists. However, the Noah have taken action, attacking the separated exorcists as the Earl invaded the American branch.

With all the scientists in the American branch mind controlled by the Noah Cheryl, The Earl sets his plan in motion to awaken the sleeping Alma Karma, whom the Order has kept hidden and unconscious in the depths of the American branch. He has most recently been used in the 3rd exorcist project, injected with Akuma cells, and then his cells were put into each of the 3rd's. But, to complete Alma's awakening the Earl needed one thing. Kanda. Out in the desert, his camp was attacked by the Noah Wisely, who quickly killed all of the Finders and then Kanda himself, who he then brought to the American branch. Once Kanda awoke, he went into his mind, broadcasting the memories of his childhood to Alma and Allen who had gotten sucked in on accident.

The Earl's plan worked. The memories awoke Alma, who was so distraught and filled with hate for the Order that he destroyed the American branch along with many of the scientists in one large blast of negative energy. Because of his injection of Akuma cells, Alma transformed into an Akuma himself, intent on destroying Kanda and the Order once and for all. Kanda has brought it on himself to put Alma out of his misery (once again) and save him and his soul
